[When the video starts up, it’s very clear that the recording is accidental and loud--there's a strange whooshing noise that has a mechanical drone to it, and the image of Elizabeth, just outside the library surrounded by odd glowing airstreams, is on its side and at a sharp upward angle, the strap of her bag obscuring a bit of it.]
[Which is fairly alarming in itself. Arcs of light seem to be coming from speaker-shaped instruments attached to the droids surrounding her. Anti-tear measures, to make certain she can’t fight back--perhaps because her boyfriend had already given them too much trouble. Elizabeth clutches her head and screams, trying to run despite feeling as though her head is about to explode. She puts up a fight, kicks and flails, but eventually there's too much to defend against while suffering the dizzying siphon. The droids overpower her and she’s pulled out of the frame and away. Seconds of that strange mechanical drone continue over the feed, then once it’s faded, the video cuts.]

[It's very rare that Gai outright yells. He's usually far too controlled for that, no matter how frustrated and angry he may be.
But something happening to Elizabeth? All bets are off, and that cry of her name is at once furious and alarmed; he's already out the door and running for the library even before the fight really gets underway.
He'll be too late, of course, but damned if he isn't going to try.
By the time he reaches the scene, his heart feels near ready to burst in his chest, and he's forced to bend over and brace himself against his knees as he takes several deep, gasping breaths. Damn it... damn it all...]
audio, private
Getting kidnapped by Shiemi made him realize that he can't show anymore weaknesses. He can always cry and worry later, but for now Shu knows that Gai needs help.
He addresses Gai in a firm and reassuring voice. It shows no hint of any of his former behavior.]
Gai, I need you to calm down.
[He needs to pull through no matter how upset he might feel. For Gai's sake, this conversation is private.]
audio, private
[Except not really, because he pretty much just yelled that at Shu. (Well, more like half-yelled, half-gasped, but that was the best he could manage at the moment.) He almost wants to laugh at Shu because that command is just so ridiculous given the current situation.
His girlfriend just got kidnapped, he thinks he's allowed a moment or two of rage here.]
audio, private
Listen to yourself and think. [That's all Shu decides to say because he wants to give Gai time to process that. He knows how much Elizabeth means to Gai and he understands Gai's behavior. Two weeks ago Shu behaved exactly the same way when he found out about his future and Inori. He doesn't want to rush Gai if he can help it.]
audio, private
It's childish and he knows it, but he's too frustrated and angry to care-- he slams the journal shut so that he doesn't have to listen to any more of Shu's commands.]
audio > action
Shu begins his search there because he doesn't think it'd take him a long time to find an angry Gai. Within moments, Shu finds Gai and he doesn't look too impressed. His expression tells the whole story.]
action
What he will get is a cold but calm glare leveled right at him, as if daring him to say something.]
action
His concerned expression suddenly changes into a calmer one. He's decided to help Gai feel better about it. Disappointment isn't going to fix anything. Shu put aside his own feelings so he can take care of Gai more. He owes Gai at least that much.
He walks over to Gai and pats him on the shoulder as a sign of condolence.]
action
Doing so on Shu isn't going to accomplish anything.]
action
[Shu says this like he's trying to console a child. He finds those words hard to believe himself. Though, saying something nice and reassuring is all he can do.]
You don't have to worry about a thing.
action
[There's a dangerous edge to his voice, a clear sign that Shu shouldn't push it. He may be controlling himself now, but it won't take much pushing to get him to snap.]

What will you do while you're waiting? [Shu's starting to sound irritated himself. He isn't sure how to deal with Gai's new emotions and it frustrates him.]
action
[In the end, the battlefield is still where Gai is the most comfortable. No matter how much he might try to pretend that he can live a completely normal life, there's still a part of him that yearns for the familiarity of combat. Fighting - and killing - are what he knows best, and they're what he turns to when he feels like he's losing control in other aspects of his life.]
action
[Where they actually had a chance against the GHQ. What does Gai have in mind?]
action
[There are combat-based missions, he knows that much. This is the perfect excuse for him to try out one of those regular missions that he'd heard some of the others talk about.]
action
I'll help. [Shu sounds more sincere this time. He owes Gai for last time.]
action
You'd just get in my way.
[It's less that and more that he knows that Shu hates fighting and is only volunteering to do it because he feels like he owes it to Gai, wants to help him out, or some combination of the two.]
action
He starts to feel bad because Gai hit ones of Shu's weaknesses. He doesn't want to get in Gai's way.]
What if something happens to you? If you get injured and Elizabeth comes back then...[Shu doesn't need to finish that sentence.]
action
[He wants to fight. He needs to fight, because it's the only way he knows of to express all of the emotional turmoil that he's feeling right now. He's angry and upset and he needs to get that out somehow in a way that doesn't involve inflicting violence on Shu or anyone else here.]
action
You aren't going to risk yourself for that. For something so meaningless too. Fighting that way won't solve anything. You're just running away.

Oh boy, oh boy, finally a chance to make her like him by saving her.
He'll just burst on through the doors of the library aaaaaaaand...
She's gone. Like forever ago.
...Well...
fuck.]
