[The fiery hair and pale eyes are distinctly his own, but what lies before the screen in place of a young, edgy creature is one twice his age and smiling with guileful ease.]

[Elizabeth, when she sees the red hair and pale skin, is instantly reminded of the boy she met. He looks... less edgy though. Less afraid.]

I learned I'm different than I was before I left my tower--but everyone changes from day to day, this isn't a shocking revelation...

[Her shift affected a few months. But apparently his was... years. He might have even been twice his age now.]

A tower? [Eyebrows lift with mild curiosity and amusement.] And what on earth were you doing there? Were you locked away for being insufferably wicked? [Ah, no shame in tossing out a teasing guess.]

...No I was locked away for being able to tear open holes in reality.

[This isn't a subject she likes to be teased over.]

[He cants his head.] Oh~?

Plenty of experiments have no apparent purpose. The first I went through involved villagers transforming into magical creatures for a few days, and another came with strange predictions in our journals that somehow all came true.

[The swan part had been fun, the genderswap and the spiders less so.]

Creatures? That sounds much more troubling than what we just experienced--imagine trying to learn how to walk all over again. Though I'm not sure how excited I would be to see strange predictions in my journal coming true...

The functional wings were nice after I learned how to use them, at least, and many others also had the opportunity to fly. But a friend of mine had a broken foot, a rare illness and a bone disease foretold. The results were not pretty.

Oh! Yes, I did enjoy flying when we all had larger wings. That experiment didn't seem all that bad. But a bone disease...

[Yes, that does sound not pretty.]

Luckily, even the results of the predictions were caused by the experiment. Every illness caught during that week disappeared the moment it was over. That's one advantage of the more... whimsical Shifts.

Yeah get used to that, these Shifts hardly ever make sense.

[Or even do anything useful. Half the time it just feels like someone's spinning a wheel on what to do to them next. ~~Or just picking whatever sounds like fun at the time~~.]

I think I've been here almost two years and not one has ever been useful let alone good for you.

How many... shifts have you been through in the span of two years, do you think?

[Now that everything was back to normal, Booker feels like he can finally breath again. Though, these 'Shift' things seem to come out of nowhere - the next one could hit any second now.

So he's not going to just sit around and wait to do something nice for her. She deserves it, in his mind, for putting up with him thinking he had to take her to New York again.

At least he didn't get hit in the face with a wrench this time.]

[Amazing, Booker actually calling for her before coming into her room. But of course she's alone, she nearly beat her boyfriend with a lamp a few days ago. (And, of course, she didn't have the impetus to want a boyfriend, she had thought she was going to see so many places.)]

[When she hears Booker, Elizabeth turns to the door and smiles.]

Yes, hold on! [She finishes tying a bow around her hair and takes a look at it in the mirror for a second. Frowning, she goes to the door and opens it.] It's... not really me anymore, is it? [There's a definite wry smile in there.]

[Booker smiles and tilts his head this way and that, as if looking at it from a slightly different angle will change things. And shrugs, placid as he could ever be.]

I dunno, I think you look just fine.

[He would say that if she were bald, too. Never trust a father about their daughter's appearance.]

Really? [Elizabeth looks at the ribbon again, then puts it back over her shoulder.] I've had my hair long for as long as I can remember. [And then she cut it off after Daisy...] And then I just got used to it being short.

Anyway-- [She waves that whole tangent away. But it's her hair, it's a very big part of how she looks. She needs an opinion from someone she trusts to tell her to truth.] --sorry. What did you need?

Y[Booker shrugs, truthfully he thought she looked much less grown up with her hair long and he might have preferred it that way. Seeing her with short hair, while it didn't matter before - would serve to remind him of all the utter crap that she had to go through just to be free of everything.

But if she liked it short, he wasn't going to tell her to do otherwise.]

[But he changes the subject with her, gladly too.]

I was just wanting to see how you were. These Shifts are a might disorienting...

[He might also have a wagon full of books that she'd picked out in the library - at least the ones he could remember...]

He certainly isn't mad at her for it, nor was he injured in any way. Still, he finds it sweet that she would ask just to make sure.]

Ah, did it bruise?! [She sounds honestly distressed and embarrassed.] I'm sorry, I was so impulsive back then. I hit Booker with a wrench, just like I did with you. [Fake crying and everything.]

[This is a story he has not heard, but now that he knows about it, he's pretty sure he wants to.]

Do I want to know what he did to deserve that?

Well... he put me on an airship he said was going to Paris, and then changed the coordinates to New York City. At that point he didn't really know me very well, and he thought he could trick me. He said he had to take me to New York in exchange for his gambling debts.

So I... well, I showed him how to trick someone.
