I like yours. [She rubs her thumb over one of Gai's, feeling the rough texture.] They feel reliable.

[Gai hesitates for a moment, almost afraid to return that gesture. Her hands ARE delicate to him, small and soft and smooth and everything his aren't.]

Let's hope they are reliable as you think they are. I would hate to disappoint on something so important...

You carried me here without dropping me. [And they were holding her so firmly and keeping her warm.] I think I've judged them well already.

[It's strange, to him, to be using his hands to protect rather than cause harm. He can't help but feel that they aren't suited for that, that they're too used to holding weapons to ever really be able to hold another person like this, yet Elizabeth seems quite happy right where she is.]

I think I'm the one who should be wondering what I did to end up with luck like this.

Maybe we just had to find one another. Somehow we manage enough luck between the two of us. [She squeezes his hand again before lacing her fingers between his.]

[The intimacy of that gesture causes Gai to inhale softly and pause for a moment. It's strange-- he can face down dozens of lasers being fired right at him without even blinking, be willing to press a button that he knew would spell his death, and yet here he is, afraid of holding hands with a girl. Really, of all the embarrassing things...

But at last he laces his fingers with hers and just smiles a little.]

Two sets of bad luck equals good luck? Hmm. That might just work after all.

[Elizabeth laughs, inwardly relieved that Gai returned her gesture even if it took a moment.] If all we've known is bad luck, anything marginally better could be construed as good.

Compared to what we've known, I think this whole place counts as pretty good.

[He's actually content, for one thing. The only time he'd truly been content back in his world was when he'd died.]

True... [She runs her thumb along the bone in Gai's thumb.] But we wouldn't have met if it were anywhere else in the world.

That alone makes being here worth it.

[He allows her to stroke his thumb, marveling at how nice that feels. He's so used to wearing gloves that the sensation of actually touching someone else's skin is still odd, to say the least.]

[Elizabeth considers that for a moment. It's true--if anything can be said about being a prisoner again, it has given her a chance to meet some amazing people and befriend them.]

[Or, in this instance, meet Gai and put her tongue in his mouth.]

Yes... it does make it worth being here.

[Only the very best experience to take away from all of this, and they haven't even had sex yet.

His own mind has already partly succumbed to the fuzziness of impending sleep when something very important occurs to him, something that he needs to bring up before they both fall asleep for real.]

If you wake up before I do, don't try to wake me up by touching me without any sort of warning.

[He's not so naive as to think that he'll be able to overcome years of ingrained instincts that easily.]

[Elizabeth is sleepy enough that she almost asks why--but it occurs to her, thankfully, before she opens her mouth. She nods against Gai's shoulder.]

Even if I have to get out from under you? [She smirks softly.]

[It's not something he's proud of; thankfully his gun is stowed away in his bedroom, so at least that is removed from the equation. Even so, he still can't erase that fear in the back of his mind that he might hurt her by mistake.]

I tend not to move much in my sleep, so hopefully that won't be a problem.

[Considering that he weighs around fifty pounds more than she does...]

Well, even if that's not the case... [She shifts against Gai, as though trying to make herself comfortable, but it's more of a comforting, reassuring gesture.] I'll be very quiet and still until you wake up.

[To show his gratitude, he gives her a gentle squeeze, dropping a kiss against her hairline. A part of him had almost expected her to decide against the risks involved with falling asleep on him like this-- if she had, he wouldn't have blamed her for it. He's well aware of how dangerous he is, both on purpose and unwittingly. Fear would only be a logical reaction.

Then again, the same could be said about her tears, yet he wasn't afraid of those.]

[Well, to be fair, there was something a little nerve-wracking sleeping on someone who would be on a hair-trigger. Elizabeth wouldn't call herself a restless sleeper, but she really didn't know what she did in her sleep.]

[But she didn't want to leave Gai alone on the couch. At all. She'll take her chances before abandoning the bond they're sharing at this moment.]

Or... I could just kiss you. I know it's typically the other way around, but if it works I don't know who could complain.

Awakening me with a kiss? Not usually how the fairy tales go, but I've never been one for sticking to traditions.

[And he's pretty sure that is something that wouldn't put him on instant alert. She may be a little scared of him, but right now, he's more scared of himself than anything else, and it's a horrible, frightening feeling.

It's another nail being painfully driven into the realization that no matter how much he may try to pretend, he can't be a normal person.]

[If Elizabeth could have heard Gai's thoughts, she would have tried to reassure him more. Maybe even tell him that she wasn't a normal person and would never be a normal person either. Promise to do whatever he needed her to do to assuage his concerns. But it sounds to her as though he's just agreeing that her method wouldn't startle him.]

Then I'll do that. It sounds like a nice way to wake up anyway.

[Gai is just fine with her interpreting it that way. His thoughts aren't something that she needs to worry about, at least not for the time being. They're something that he has to deal with on his own. Or, more precisely, they're something that he doesn't want her to be concerned over.]

I can definitely agree to that much.
