tbh i'm not really sure what that means. do we have to sit together on the space-bus? not that i'm not excited, but field trips and i don't have a great track record
Oh! Yes, that's right! I'm sorry you had to come to me, I've been so busy settling my new assistants in at the library.
I think it means that if you need help getting settled, I'm here to help! And now that I have the library squared away for the moment, I have quite a bit more time to 'sit on the bus' with you.
Of course! I'm always happy to talk about the library-- spending almost all my time there means I know it like the back of my hand. Were you looking for something specific?
a sort of specific sort of generalization, i guess. i'm one of the new gen ed teachers here, and i'm trying to get a feel for any common knowledge and interests in the crew.
with so many different worlds, it's just a little daunting trying to figure out what the cultural baseline is. where i'm from we don't have all of this stuff.
[ A grammatical white lie: All isn't 'most'. ]
have you noticed any patterns in the books that get stocked? or in the ones that people actually check out? anything you could tell me would be like. super amazingly helpful.
That sounds like an obscenely complicated task you have ahead of you. All of us seem to be from vastly different timelines, and aside from some very basic building blocks everything seems to vary quite a bit. We're in a similar boat-- where I'm from, we don't have space travel. It made the first week quite the learning curve.
Mostly I've noticed quite a few people taking interest in our materials about space and spaceships. I think when someone who isn't used to space travel arrives here, the first thing they want to know is if this ship is going to fall apart around them. After that, I'm happy to report, most people are looking for pleasure reading.
[ She avoids making a 'similar boat' pun with the spaceship. Barely. ]
i can't imagine how jarring that must have been, i'm sorry.
we at least had movies and stories where this kind of thing was possible. it's still unbelievable, but having expectations to relate all this to is really helping.
thank you. i've been thinking it's a good idea to do a basic seminar, every time we get new people in. just like: space 101.
you must be very busy with the library, but if there are any books you found particularly helpful with the adjustment process for that, i'd be grateful for a nod in their direction. maybe we could put together a list for people.
It wasn't as bad as it sounds, strangely enough. It was jarring, but I've seen some strange things before. Space travel wasn't too much of a stretch.
The seminar sounds like a good idea! I'll take stock of our collection and send you a list later today. I have several assistants now, I can take on a project like this right away!
thanks so much. it sounds like you've got hands on deck but if you ever need any help with it, just let me know. or help with something else i guess. i make a mean manhattan
text; after the refugees are settled & buddies are assigned

you're the head of the library though? that's so neat — i'd actually love to pick your brain a bit about that if you don't mind
